Master of Arts in Education: Teacher as Leader
If your passion is teaching and you are ready to advance your career to the next level through the Master of Arts in Education Degree, Northern Kentucky University offers an ideal program for you.
The MAEd program at NKU is designed to help certified teachers improve effectiveness as documented through learning outcomes and test performance. The program is responsive to the needs of individual teachers and school districts, and provides opportunities for students to craft projects that directly impact their specific classroom challenges.
The online format allows in-state, out-of-state, and international students to complete the curriculum from the convenience of their home computers via the Internet. The curriculum has been developed for online delivery by seasoned, full-time faculty members from NKU’s College of Education and Human Services. Students can complete the 30-credit-hour program in five semesters (about 20 months).

Curriculum
The online MAEd program allows the working professional to complete the degree within 20 months by taking six to nine credit hours each semester. Full-time enrollment is also available for students who want to complete the program sooner. Students may enter the program two times per year in the fall, spring or summer semester. Some courses may be delivered in a blended format, meaning the coursework will be online and certain course content may be face-to-face or a synchronous session.
The curriculum requires 15 credit hours in the Professional Core. Students also select a 12 credit-hour content specialization. Currently, NKU offers a specialization in Gifted and Talented Education and English in an online format. Other online options for content specializations are under development. Upon approval from the College of Education, students may transfer 12 hours from another regionally accredited university to fulfill the content specialization. One elective course rounds out the degree requirements.
