Certificate in Business Informatics
What is Business Informatics? It's the application of computer technology to the world of business. Organizations use and value information as a business asset, and seek qualified people who understand and can manage business information in the areas of marketing and promotions, finance and accounting, or the business operations. Career opportunities for people with a certificate in Business Informatics include working with databases, e-commerce, and project management.
The online certificate in BIS at NKU requires the four courses (12 semester hours) listed below. Students may begin the certificate program in spring, summer or fall semesters.
BIS105 Introduction to Business Computing:
Application of computer hardware, software, and computing techniques to common business problems and activities; microcomputers and business productivity packages including word processors, spreadsheets, databases, and other systems and applications software; extensive hands- on work in a graphical user environment.
INF110 Business Programming:
Strategies, techniques, and tools for professional programming in a business environment. The student will learn advanced programming topics in Excel, Word and Access. PREREQ: College-level mathematics course or equivalent.
INF282 Introduction to Databases:
Core concepts for the design, creation, and manipulation of relational databases. Analysis of data requirements, conceptual modeling, definition of the relational model, relational database design and normalization, and database implementation; manipulation of relational databases using relational algebra with SQL. PREREQ: INF110 or permission of instructor.
BIS300 Management Information Systems:
Principles of MIS designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Management Information Systems and to apply problem-solving skills in Excel, Access, and Web development. PREREQ: Demonstrated competency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint (e.g., completion of BIS105) or permission of instructor.

Admission Process
The BIS Certificate is a non-degree program.
If you are interested in applying for admission to the BIS program, please follow the steps below.
1. Access the Undergraduate Application for Admission at http://apply.nku.edu/
2. Select the Non-Degree Admission Type. Select "Certificate in Business Informatics" as your major.
3. Submit verification that you have completed a college-level mathematics course. For more information about this requirement, contact NKUonline@nku.edu
4. Submit your completed application form with a $25 non-refundable application fee by the following application deadlines:
Fall: Aug. 1
Spring: Dec. 1
Summer: May 1
